He joined the research and development department of Southern California Edison Company (SCE) as a Senior Research Scientist where he was responsible for companywide Nitric Oxides (NOx) emissions reduction. At SCE Dr. Mansour was instrumental in the invention of several advanced NOx reduction technologies including Low NOx Burners (LNBs), Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction Systems (SNCR), and advanced combustion systems from the clean combustion of high nitrogen content Shale Oil. Also at SCE, Dr. Mansour worked on advanced energy systems including use of Methanol to replace oil, Magneto Hydro Dynamic (MHD), Compressed Air Storage, solar and wind power.

Dr. Mansour founded his company; Applied Utility Systems, Inc. (AUS). The growth of AUS was phenomenal and was thus recognized in 1992 by INC. MAGAZINE as one of the top 500 fastest growing private companies in the US (http://m.inc.com/?incid=1032). In addition, Dr. Mansour was recognized in 2004 as finalist-Orange County “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernest and Young.
AUS had a major impact on air quality in Southern California and the US at large. NOx reduction systems installed by AUS included:

  • 4000 MW of LNBs;
  • 7000 MW of SNCR;
  • 4000 MW of Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems (SCR)

A key to AUS success is the ability to form specialized divisions in a vertically integrated strategy to supply all of the emissions reduction needs of its client. Growth was also achieved through a deliberate and consistent process of forming joint ventures or strategic alliances with technological partners.
AUS revenues peaked at $70 and was ultimately sold to Johnson Matthey of Pennsylvania; a $10 billion a year company (http://www.dieselgasturbine.com/October-2009/Johnson-Matthey-Acquires-Applied-Utility-Systems-From-Catalytic-Solutions).
